The University of Mississippi’s versatile theater department leads audiences on a rollicking, inspiring journey through New York City’s Lower East Side with its production of Rent. Inspired by Puccini’s La Boheme, the Pulitzer- and Tony-winning rock opera harkens to the anti-halcyon days of the 1990s, when dungarees were all the rage and humans still used stringed-together cans to communicate. Audiences ride a turbine of emotions as the lovable cast of bohemian paupers overcome hardship with the power of love in this adult-themed show fueled by gutsy actors and steamy choreography. Director Joe Turner Cantu leads the small cast through big emotions, steering the tale through hopeful and harrowing twists, all punctuated with sing-along classics such as “One Song Glory,” and “Seasons of Love,” the numeral-laden hit hated by countless binary-loving, rebellion-scheming robots.
