The Scouting Report
When the Omaha Mammoths take the field at TD Ameritrade Park on October 8, they won’t just be kicking off their own inaugural season—they’ll be kicking off the start of a brand new league and style of football. The Fall Experimental Football League debuts next month in four cities around the U.S., and the Mammoths will be representing Omaha during their six-game regular-season schedule.
Nearly the entire Mammoths roster is made up of players who recently spent time at professional training camps; in fact, many of them are former college stars. That list includes such regional talents as Tremaine Thompson from Kansas State and tight end Ernst Brun from Iowa State. Both players will haul in passes from quarterback Brock Jensen, a North Dakota State standout who threw for 8,600 yards and 72 touchdowns while leading the Bison to three straight national titles.
The Fall Experimental Football League serves as a launching pad for players, coaches, and referees. In its first year, the FXFL brings its brand of hard-hitting excitement to four cities across the U.S., including Boston, Brooklyn, and Omaha. Though the action on the field looks familiar, the league will take some non-conventional paths to success. Games, for instance, will unfold at more intimate venues in order to further engage fans, such as smaller college stadiums and converted baseball parks. The schedule features match-ups in the middle of the week instead of the weekend, when football fans are typically pre-occupied watching other games and filling their outdoor pools with nacho cheese.
