On Location: Memphis International Film and Music Festival

Formerly known as the Memphis International Film Festival, On Location celebrates its 14th year of screening independent movies from around the world. Opening night takes place at Paradiso Theater, and all other films screen at the Studio on the Square. At the tail end of each day’s line-up , Purple Haze Nightclub hosts music-video screenings along with live bands.

The four days of cinematic eye candy include selections in the following categories:

The festival opens with the narrative Ole Beale Street, an exploration of Memphis’s music scene, before careening into dramas and comedies such as RockBarnes: The Emperor in You. Erik Stolhanske of the Broken Lizard comedy troupe (Super Troopers, Beer Fest) stars as RockBarnes (one word), a self-help guru with issues of his own.

####Documentaries Cinematic explorations shed light on everything from the painters melding auditory and visual art in ScrambleVision to the story of ex-marine and martial-arts expert Victor Marx. In I am Not a Rock Star, eight years of film footage follows the blossoming—both artistic and psychological—of pianist Marika Bournaki.

####Shorts Shorts act like visual popcorn, delighting the sense with every bite. From Daddy Donor, a comedy about sperm donation, to Avarice, a fantastic fairytale that places a girl between forces of light and dark, to Counting Happiness, one boy's imaginative exploration of Delhi, each work is focused and intense.

###Animation Modern animation is more than drawings of dogs dancing and toasters screaming that their insides are burning. On Location spotlights modern techniques for kids and adults alike with a computer-animated pilot and intricately detailed forest tale.
