Mark Ravenhill’s dark and enticing drama opens with friends of a famous artist gathering at her home for a reunion. But the celebration quickly turns dark when the host becomes injured in a terrible accident. Soon, long-buried resentments surface as the friends ponder the unthinkable: could they turn her misery into art?

This intense drama, which returns to the One Year Lease Theater Company after its 2012 staging, brings much praise with it. The New York Times’s Charles Isherwood declared it to be “full of perceptive commentary on the tension between affection and antipathy among friends and the interior tensions in the individual soul between self-love and self-hate.” Theatermania’s Andy Propst, meanwhile, called it “riveting from start to finish.”

One Year Lease Theater Company

"We deliberately eliminate distraction," the minds behind the One Year Lease Theater Company say on their website. It's an approach that succinctly sums up the works they stage: stripped-down productions that focus on dialogue, character development, and human expression instead of ornate costumes and holographic set pieces. And it's a formula that's been working since the company's 2001 inception. In the decade since, the theater has drawn praise from media outlets around the city, including NYTheatre.com, which said the company "should serve as inspiration to other theatre groups."
