Flowers in hand, the formerly vacillating Ben has settled on a definite course: to propose to Lucy, the girl of his dreams, before she leaves town on vacation. Getting over his nerves appears to be least of his struggles, though, as a series of phone calls keeps Lucy so tied up that he can’t find a chance to bend his knee. As her departure nears, Ben results to ploys of ever-increasing desperation to land his lady. Written by Pulitzer-winning composer Gian Carlo Menotti in 1947, The Telephone remains just as relevant today, if not more, delighting showgoers with a completely realized confection about love, communication, and the importance of proposing via skywriter.
Madame Flora—Baba to her daughter Monica and her mute servant Toby—is a masterful manipulator, convincing those who have lost loved ones that she is communicating with their deceased spirits. But during one such seance, the proceedings are suddenly cut short when Madame Flora feels a phantom hand clutching her throat. Enraged, she accuses the unfortunate Toby of some trickery, but the boy was nowhere near the scene. Over the next few days, ghostly annoyances continue to bedevil the unscrupulous medium—she hears voices from unseen origins, and finds that all her sheets have had eyeholes cut into them. And as Madame Flora’s hysteria mounts, her sanity begins to crumble. Gian Carlo Menotti’s 20th-century opera puts a noirish spin on timeless themes of sin and just deserts.
