Alex, a 22-year-old father from a First Nations community in northern Ontario, had dropped out of school four times. In an interview with CBC News, he described how he found himself not only missing class, but also experimenting with drugs and drifting away from his family. But then he got involved with Outside Looking In, an organization founded in 2007 to provide artistic outlets and positive reinforcement for youth in indigenous communities. Alex says that participating in the rigorous program—which culminates each year with a performance in downtown Toronto—not only got him back in school, but “saved his life.”

On June 20, the corps will showcase six months of training, choreography, and hard work on the stage of the Bluma Appel Theatre, which underwent a $3 million renovation in 2007. A multimedia performance, the show surrounds the energy, spirit, and joy of the performers’ movements with snippets of photography, videography, and paintings. The multisensory extravaganza is designed to meld enjoyment with education and inspiration: founder Tracee Smith believes that the audience will “be entertained, and leave feeling like you learned something about aboriginal peoples.”
