Ozomatli’s stomping grounds: LA
Their sonic stomping grounds: the world
How so: Apart from lacing their Latin rock with hip-hop, salsa, and funk, they’ve served as U.S. Cultural Ambassadors at the invitation of the State Department, playing free concerts throughout Asia, Africa, South America, and the Middle East.
Other musical barriers they’ve broken: They gave the TEDxSF conference’s first musical talk—really, really impressing Ted—and their high-energy concerts almost always break the barrier between performer and audience by including the crowd.
For their efforts: they won Grammys in 2002 and 2005, both for best Latin-rock/alternative album
