She & Him

She & Him – "I Could've Been Your Girl"

Since releasing their first album in 2008, She & Him—composed of veteran musician M. Ward and Zooey Deschanel, of New Girl fame—have won indie accolades left and right. NPR’s Stephen Thompson described the band’s sophomore release as “the audio equivalent of a spring breeze that wafts in at a perfect time.” The pair take cues from the joyous, keyboard-sprinkled pop songs of the 1960s and ’70s and blend them with Ward’s guitar chops, which tackle the sounds of folk, country, and pure rock ‘n’ roll with equal dexterity. Together, She & Him’s tunes span from Volume One’s “Why Do You Let Me Stay Here,” which blends folksy guitar with earnest doo-wops, to Volume Two’s “Lingering Still,” a ballad with a bossa nova beat and country-style vocals. Volume Three celebrates the band’s signature sound with a cover of “Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me,” and tosses in original piano ballad “London” in hopes of attaining co-knighthood.

Pabst Theater

Captain Frederick Pabst contributed to Milwaukee’s status as a cultural landmark of the upper Midwest by building Pabst Theater, formally known as Das Neue Deutsche Stadt-Theater, in 1895. According to legend, when he was informed that his theater had burned to the ground, the brewing magnate interrupted his European vacation to wire home the order to “Rebuild at once!”—and 11 months later, the stage was completed anew. Where the old theater honored German artists by having their names inscribed along the cornice of the auditorium, the new building featured an international consortium of cultural notables. The theater’s globe-spanning influences were made even more apparent with the installation of an Austrian crystal chandelier and an Italian marble staircase.
