In Stephen Massicotte’s new work commissioned and developed by Pacific Opera Victoria, young Canadians Mary Chalmers and Charlie Edwards find their attraction for each other at odds with the hostility of a world suddenly at war. The curtain opens on the night of Mary’s wedding, two years after the end of World War I. Before long, the bride-to-be slides into a retrospective account of her first love—a farm boy at battle whom she communicates with via letters and carrier pigeons trained to coo in falsetto. Massicotte’s libretto brilliantly interweaves the lovers’ tale with the real-life story of Lieutenant Gordon Flowerdew, whose charge at Moreuil Wood stands as the symbolic moment at which Canada evolved from a diminutive sapling to a full-blown maple behemoth.
All Pacific Opera Victoria costumes and sets are crafted in the opera’s own Victoria shop and designed exclusively for each production, ensuring a stimulating visual feast imbued with creative integrity and homemade gravy. With its neoclassical arches and tasteful ornamentation, the 772-seat McPherson Playhouse promises an elegant setting for the world premiere of Mary’s Wedding and unobstructed views for audience members seated in the main floor or balcony.
Though seniors and students are eligible for discounts in section B, this Groupon still represents the best value for tickets in both sections.
