The Paramount Theatre celebrates its 80th year by thrilling audiences with a series of two shows plucked from the golden age of Broadway. My Fair Lady (September 14–October 2) jump-starts the run with its adaptation of George Bernard Shaw’s 1912 novel Pygmalion, the frown-pummeling yarn of an upper-crust linguistics professor who attempts to transform a cockney-accented flower peddler into a refined society woman. Although some theatergoers scoff at the play’s twist ending, wherein protagonist Eliza Doolittle uses her new accent to launch a voice-activated robot army, My Fair Lady remains a joyful period piece with head-bobbing songs such as “Wouldn’t It Be Loverly?” and “I Could Have Danced All Night.”

Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Tony Award–nominated Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat (November 2–20) jazzes up the Biblical tale of Joseph and his jealous sepia-jacketed brothers while a vivacious cast dances its way through a fast-paced score of rock ‘n’ roll, disco, and reggae melodies. With the supplied drink ticket (a $5 value), musical devotees can tilt their pinkies to an array of wine, beer, and cocktails while debating whether Lerner and Loewe would win a three-legged sack race against the notoriously four-legged Lloyd Webber.
