Hip Hop Nutcracker

• A holiday mashup: The Nutcracker is an undeniable holiday classic. But choreographers Ale Martinez and Issac Sanders recognize that not everyone digs ballet. Their solution? Mix the iconic pieces of the story and Tchaikovsky’s score (with a twist) to explosive hip-hop dance.
• The pieces: Nationally known hip-hop soloists who transport the score and story with a contemporary flavor. Sanders and Martinez, dance partners who met at the Academy of Villains, incorporate their dance and hip-hop backgrounds into the performance, fusing love, holiday spirit, community, and even a little magic. Martinez, a Bay Area native, has traveled the globe teaching dance, appeared on Season 7 of America’s Got Talent, and was crowned—along with her dance crew—”Fake Off Champions” on the show Fake Off.
• The story: Clara receives a prized wooden nutcracker during a holiday party at her Victorian home. Once she falls asleep, her dream takes her into a world with wizards, toy soldiers, mice, and a sugar plum fairy, the likes of which have never been seen before. But instead of a candy land, Clara finds herself surrounded by a cast of characters with new urban sensibility.
