PharmaBro: An American Douchical!
In 2015, drug executive Martin Shkreli earned international ire when his company jacked up the price of a life-saving drug. Although he had dubious honor of being named “the most hated man in America” and “pharma bro,” Shkreli seemed to revel in the attention, becoming better known as an internet troll than an entrepreneur. The outrage took a surreal turn when Shkreli was revealed as the purchaser of the single copy in existence of Wu-Tang Clan’s Once Upon a Time in Shaolin.
Fans were incensed, and a Twitter joke about a heist to retrieve the album by the hip-hop group—and Bill Murray, for some reason—circulated as truth. The Off-Broadway production PharmaBro imagines this bizarre tale as a scathing satirical musical. Relevant and ridiculous, it portrays GZA, RZA, Ghostface Killah, and Murray as the heroes and Shkreli, planted permanently on his hoverboard, as the maniacal villain. Oh, and the ghost of Ol’ Dirty Bastard is there, too.
