Like learning to use chopsticks, roller-skating takes patience, dedication, and a particularly dexterous set of toes. Witness the wonders of flexible feet with today's GrouponLive deal: for $15, you get two general-admission tickets to a Philly Roller Girls doubleheader featuring its traveling teams, the Independence Dolls and Liberty Belles, at the Penn Ice Rink in the Class of 1923 Arena (a $30 value). Seats are unassigned, doors open at 5 p.m., and tickets should be picked up at will call before the event. Choose between the following options:
• Independence Dolls vs. Lake Effect Furies, followed by Liberty Belles vs. Minnesota RollerGirls All-Stars on Saturday, August 6, at 6 p.m.
• Independence Dolls vs. Central New York Roller Derby All-Stars, followed by Liberty Belles vs. TBD on Saturday, August 27, at 6 p.m.
Embodying the spirit of roller derby, the Independence Dolls and Liberty Belles wow fans and daunt rivals with their lightning-fast strides and thunderous hip-checks. Representing the Philly Roller Girls—a volunteer-run Women’s Flat Track Derby Association league with more than 50 skaters and one racehorse on wheels—these teams tour the country in their striped knee socks and sass-filled getups. In the first bout of the evening, Dolls co-captains Rollanya Asse and LaiYa Out Ali will fly past opponents on old-school skates, proving why the league is ranked number two in their division and number seven worldwide. The all-star Belles will take the rink next, stuffing their bout with sweaty, full-contact jams and sweet homemade marmalades. This season, rookie roller Goldy leads the pack, along with seasoned vets such as pivot Ginger Vitis and jamming sensations Teflon Donna and Shenita Stretcher.
The August 27 event has been canceled. Customers will be able to redeem their Groupon during next season at the Class of 1923 Arena. While an official schedule has yet to be released, games will be held between April 1, 2012 and August 31, 2012.
