The Scouting Report

At the WNBA draft on April 15, the Mercury selected Brittney Griner first overall. Griner was coming off the most dominating career women’s college basketball has ever seen. She led Baylor University to an NCAA title in 2012, and recorded 748 blocked shots—more than any man, woman, or wobbly wall of textbooks in college basketball history. The expectations for Griner and the Mercury are high for the 2013 season, and neither has disappointed thus far. Through her first six contests as a pro, Griner averaged 14 points, six rebounds, and nearly three blocks per game. With the rookie center stealing the spotlight, established star Diana Taurasi has quietly added 24 points per game. Together, the duo has once again made the Mercury a playoff contender, a status that the Sparks and Lynx will put to the test come mid-July.

Phoenix Mercury

As one of the WNBA’s eight charter franchises, the Phoenix Mercury have brought some of the league’s biggest stars to the valley over the years. In 2004, the Mercury selected Diana Taurasi with the first overall pick. Two years later, they snagged Cappie Pondexter. Those two selections paid huge dividends in 2007 as the team claimed its first-ever WNBA championship. But perhaps the Mercury’s biggest acquisition didn’t come until April 2013, when they selected Baylor University’s Brittney Griner. Like with Taurasi and Pondexter before her, the Mercury figure to lean on Griner for years to come in hopes of capturing more WNBA titles.
