Originally founded as a sanctuary for flowers, birds, and their admirers, Pinecrest Gardens has flourished into a family-friendly retreat that entertains visitors with artistic events in its scenic setting. On March 23 and 25, performers from Miami’s Children’s Theater delight playgoers with the beloved musical comedy based on Charles M. Schultz’ classic comic strip Peanuts. Throughout the stretch of a day, lovable blockhead Charlie Brown ponders his character and life in general, even after his cohorts warble the praising title song to him at the play’s opening. Struck by the enigmatic Little Red-Haired Girl, Charlie still can’t muster up the courage to approach her at lunch, leaving him feeling deflated and seeking the off-color psychiatric guidance of bossy know-it-all Lucy.
Despite Charlie’s misfortunes, a collection of whimsical tunes such as “The Book Report” and “Glee Club Rehearsal” uplift audience spirits, with the final song, “Happiness,” teaching him to appreciate the little things in life and accept himself. The musical is also peppered with comic-specific details, from Snoopy’s Red Baron daydreams to Schroeder’s piano-playing skills and Linus’s signature blanket. These charming touches, along with the musical’s celebration of mankind, bring Schultz’s timeless characters to life more vividly than storing a Snoopy parade balloon in your living room.
Founded as a sanctuary for flowers, birds, and their admirers, Pinecrest Gardens has flourished into a family-friendly retreat that entertains visitors with horticultural exhibits and artistic events in a scenic setting. Spanning 4.3 acres of forested wetland, the gardens harbor more than 1,000 rare and exotic plants, including a 100-year-old coco plum tree, orchids, and a banyan tree that spreads across three-fourths of an acre. Waterways full of fish snake through these plants, their inhabitants impatiently pursing their lips at visitors for handfuls of food.
Pinecrest Gardens offers other entertainment opportunities for youngsters, who can splash around in the water playground, spot wildlife at Swan Lake, or play with potbellied pigs at the petting zoo. In addition, the 500-seat outdoor Banyan Bowl offers concertgoers pristine acoustics and cool evening breezes along with complimentary views of the stars.
