Based on Edgar Rice Burroughs’ Tarzan of the Apes and Disney’s animated adaptation from 1999, Tarzan sends audiences deep into the jungles of West Africa with a orphaned baby boy who finds himself in an unlikely family: a tribe of gorillas. Raised by his primate companions, Tarzan strives to understand what it is that makes him different from them besides his abnormally large, bald ears, and finds his answer when he encounters humans for the first time. One in particular catches his attention, and his friendship with the stranger named Jane will change his life forever.
Tony-winning playwright David Henry Hwang’s script gets a drum-laden boost from composer and lyricist Phil Collins. Building on the score he wrote for Disney’s 1999 film, including the Oscar-winning “You’ll Be in My Heart”, Collins built a lush sonic canopy for the jungle setting, set off by a hearty dose of hand percussion (heavily on display in “Son of Man” and the soaring “Strangers Like Me”). Ballads such as Tarzan and Jane’s “For the First Time” and “You’ll Be in My Heart” tug at the heartstrings as delicately as a world-class heartstring surgeon.
