Pompeii: The Exhibition
In 79 A.D., the eruption of Mount Vesuvius rained molten lava and ash upon the entirety of Pompeii. The volcano ejected its deathly innards at a rate of 1.5 million tons per second, making it one of the most catastrophic volcanic eruptions in living history. Only discovered in the mid-eighteenth century, it was revealed that the disaster froze both the residents and remnants of Pompeii in a devastating, centuries-old snapshot.
Now, OMSI offers an in-depth exploration of the ancient natural disaster, with nearly 200 artifacts on display. Pompeii: The Exhibition delves into a depiction of daily life with reproductions of a Roman villa and its bustling streets and markets. It also showcases authentic body casts of the townspeople as well as precious relics like art, gladiator helmets, weapons, and jewelry on loan from Naples National Archaeological Museum. And to fully understand Vesuvius’ wrath, the exhibition’s 4D theater lets visitors experience the volcano’s shaking might, sounds, and sights.
