The Scouting Report
On March 8, the two Port City Roller Girls home squads—the Rough & Ready Betties and the Delta Sirens—squared off in a high-octane bout, opening the season by blocking and racing against their own teammates. On April 5, the stakes will be much higher, as the PCRG All Stars—the best jammers, blockers, and pivots from both subordinate squads—must defend their home track against the Oly Rollers, who cruise in from Olympia, Washington intent to outpace the Port City squad and besmirch their knee-pads.
Port City Roller-Girls
Founded in May, 2006, the skater-owned-and-operated Port City Roller Girls have flourished into a fierce roster of female combatants who seamlessly intertwine their talents despite diverse backgrounds, age gaps, and varying definitions of pain. During each bout, helmeted players joust elbow-to-elbow while soaring around a flat track, clearing avenues for fleet-footed jammers who whiz through the traffic—and opponents looking to knock them off their route—to score points. Referees monitor all the action, which is split into two rounds by a halftime period that allows attendees to stretch their legs or compare helmet prototypes in the parking lot.
