The Scouting Report
For the Winterhawks, a win in the Western Conference finals isn’t just a means of earning a trip to the WHL championship series—it’s another rung on the ladder to building a legacy. The Winterhawks entered this season with a chance to repeat as WHL champs, and they made it clear from the first puck-drop they were shooting for just that, amassing a 54-13–2–3 regular-season record that was second-best in the league. In the Western Conference series, the Hawks will face their biggest test in defending their throne as they take the ice against the number one-seeded Kelowna Rockets. The Rockets owned the Winterhawks in the regular-season, winning all four of their matchups, leading everyone throughout the Okanagan Valley to wonder if the Winterhawks are just a bunch of pool hall hustlers in disguise.
The Winterhawks have a winning legacy, claiming 11 Western Conference championships since 1976 as well as three league titles, in ‘83, ‘98, and ‘13. That first Memorial Cup win made the ‘Hawks the first American team to take home the CHL’s greatest honor, leading to one of the most rapturous customs paperwork signings in history.
