Preservation Hall Jazz Band and Allen Toussaint

  • What Preservation Hall Jazz Band and Allen Toussaint have in common: they’re both a part of the rich musical tradition of New Orleans
  • What they don’t have in common: one’s a band, the other’s a guy
  • The Preservation Hall story: the venue was founded in the early ‘60’s to celebrate and preserve traditional New Orleans jazz, and continues to host an ever-rotating ensemble playing the music
  • Why they’re not stuck in the past: on the group’s 50th anniversary, Creative Director Ben Jaffe declared that “this anniversary is about the next fifty years.”
  • Prime example of just that: in 2013, they released That’s It!, their first album of all-original material
  • Allen Toussaint’s place in New Orleans history: he “almost single-handedly fashioned a fresh, vital New Orleans R&B sound for the 1960s and ’70s,” according to AllMusic.com
  • What that’s earned him: a long and fruitful career, and induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame, and the Blues Hall of Fame
  • A few of his famous collaborators: Paul McCartney, Paul Simon, Elvis Costello, Patti LaBelle, and Etta James
