Acclaimed European conductor David Danzmayr brings his sought-after skills to Columbus for the 11th annual iteration of ProMusica’s most festive holiday tradition: the Messiah Sing-Along. Handel’s masterful oratorio contemplates the story of Jesus Christ in three parts, beginning with prophesies of the baby’s birth during “For Unto Us A Child Is Born.” Later, the audience joins in the euphony of church choirs and string ensembles as they fill the theater with the famous “Hallelujah Chorus,” which pays ecstatic homage to the resurrection.
Returning fans need not fear—new ProMusica Music Director David Danzmayr leads and hosts the affair with plenty of credentials under his cummerbund. Having led the Illinois Philharmonic Orchestra, served as assistant conductor to the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, and won first prize at the International Maiko Conducting Competition, he ensures that this year’s Messiah will be precise and that no herds of cellists will stray off stage mid-concert.
ProMusica Chamber Orchestra
ProMusica Chamber Orchestra not only celebrates some of the most beautiful music ever written, it helps artists create more. Since its founding in 1978, it has commissioned 64 pieces and presented more than 110 world premieres by composers such as Peter Schickele and Pulitzer Prize winner Aaron Jay Kernis. This, coupled with the ensemble's tendency to mix time-tested pieces with modern American masterpieces, has helped it rack up eight awards from the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers.
