They weren’t the only all-girl band to come out of the snarling LA punk scene of 1978, but they were the most fun. On beer-soaked stages, they bowled over crowds with a sound that was fast, hooky, and irrepressibly peppy. Sharp playing. Stellar singing. Pure-pop instincts. No shtick. All original material with no Svengalis pulling strings. They weren’t trying to be cool. And that made The Go-Go’s even cooler.

By 1981, The Go-Go’s were inescapable. Their double-platinum debut album, Beauty and the Beat, became the soundtrack for valley girls, plainsmen pining for valley girls, and all square pegs within earshot as tracks such as “We Got the Beat” and “Our Lips Are Sealed” entered MTV perpetuity. The inertia continued through 1982’s Vacation and 1984’s Talk Show, adding more smash hits into the pop lexicon. Unlike most bands from the 1980s, the songs of The Go-Go’s don’t sound dated, and the group looks like they’ve spent the last three decades enacting Busby Berkeley routines in a fountain of youth.

On their 2012 tour, all five original members of The Go-Go’s are revved up and ready to bound about at The Mahaffey. Lead singer Belinda Carlisle shoots sunbeams from her throat as she does her signature elbow-shimmy dance. Charlotte Caffey and Jane Wiedlin’s guitars play jump rope, intertwining chugging chords and roaring solos alike. Kathy Valentine’s bass slides and stomps like a greased-up sumo wrestler playing hopscotch, and Gina Schock pummels her drums with ‘60s big-beat glee. Checking off every hit on their list, the band satiates longtime fans in a set of iconic chart toppers mixed with a few surprises, including deep cuts for diehard followers and a handful of Carlisle’s solo numbers. The Mahaffey elegantly houses the show in a modern, glass-lined space that offers arriving visitors panoramic views of the bay and early warning of reptilian Bangles rising out of the water.

The Mahaffey Theater

Just minutes from downtown's bustling shops and overlooking the glassy waters of Tampa Bay, The Mahaffey Theater's picturesque building hosts some of Florida's most entertaining art and performance offerings. Originally built in 1965, the renovated building's floor-to-ceiling glass façade pierces the night with softly glowing light, cordially inviting patrons inside and awakening desires in moths that can never be fulfilled. The box-style seating of the theater ensures clear sightlines for all patrons, and its excellent acoustics make the venue suitable for both thunderous rock bands and delicate chamber ensembles.
