When they began the audition search for the Queen Extravaganza’s eventual members, Queen’s guitarist, Brian May, and drummer, Roger Taylor, didn’t want musicians who could simply imitate their sound. They also wanted them to carry their legacy to a new generation of fans. After 12 weeks, they found nine members that fit the bill. The ensemble of four vocalists and five musicians is fronted by Marc Martel, whose audition tape earned him no small amount of online attention as he uncannily replicated Freddie Mercury’s soaring tenor and aggressive growl. The show, which runs about two hours of playing time with a 30-minute break, covers almost 40 classics, from the rock-orchestra bombast of hits such as “Bohemian Rhapsody” to more obscure early-period anthems such as “Tie Your Mother Down” and “Seven Seas of Rhye.” Equal to the auditory spectacle are the show’s visuals, bursting with surprises such as never-before-seen video footage and a man playing piano and singing at the same time.
