In Rupert Holmes’ Accomplice, four lost souls trade quips and plot each others’ murder during a stay at a bucolic country estate – or else none of that happens. In fact, there isn’t much that’s certain in the Edgar Award-winning mystery spoof: not the characters’ names, nor their motivations, nor even the setting itself. After a whirlwind of homicidal ambitions, potential nudity, and theatrical in-jokes, audience members are sworn to secrecy, a vow many gladly take not only to avoid ruining the surprise, but also because they just might be implicated. Though Holmes is perhaps best known as the singer-songwriter behind “Escape (The Pina Colada Song),” Accomplice is not his first foray into genre-bending theater – 1985’s uproarious Drood (for which he won two Tonys) had its ending determined afresh each night by audience vote, inspiring other directors to let their viewers choose between Les Miserables and Les Joyeux.
