For 85 years, the Rockettes have made themselves as much an NYC touchstone as the Empire State Building with precision dancing, luminous costumes, and high-kicking lines that comb the sky with pointed toes. And for 80 of those years, they’ve boosted American spirits and dilated American pupils with the sheer spectacle of the Radio City Christmas Spectacular. This year’s cherished Yuletide cavalcade celebrates both anniversaries with a dazzling blend of 21st-century special effects, timeless showstoppers, and a showcase of the most glamorous Rockette costumes from their history.
Bob Mackie’s sequined turbans and rhinestone-fringed arm floats are back from a 1982 show, along with a showstopping celebration of the jazz era created by Marco Montedoro in 1933 that features the Rockettes in red and gold spangles, chiffon, and feathers. The 3-D animated backdrops from last year’s Magical Journey production transport the Rockettes from the shimmering aurora borealis of the North Pole to a Central Park blanketed in snow. The perennial Living Nativity tableau takes on even more celestial dimensions than usual thanks to digital mapping, which immerses audiences in projections of the Bethlehem foothills and an ocean of stars—both of which extend far beyond the confines of the stage to conform to the contours of the venue.
In a surprise cameo, Santa Claus demonstrates exactly how he is able to visit every house on Christmas Eve before unveiling a workshop full of living toys performing selections from The Nutcracker. Not to be outdone, the dancers enliven the repetitive structure of “The Twelve Days of Christmas” with an endlessly inventive tap routine. And no Christmas with the Rockettes would be complete without the clockwork-precise Parade of the Wooden Soldiers, as the Rockettes cascade back like human dominoes while wearing Vincente Minnelli’s classic 1933 costume.
