What You’ll Do
A blank piece of cotton is a canvas ripe for creative expression. With the guidance of Divine NY & Co’s founder and creative director Rekha Krishnamurthi, you’ll learn how to transform a blank scarf into a colorful accessory using fiber-reactive dyes and fixers. You’ll leave with your scarf and instructions detailing how to craft another masterpiece at home.
Dye Your Own Scarf
After receiving a blank 15”x60” cotton scarf, you’ll learn an easy technique to color fabric using fiber-reactive dyes, soda ash fixer (to set the color), and urea (an organic compound used in the dyeing process).
Dry and Wear
Once your custom scarf is set and dry, wear it around your neck to add flair to a simple outfit, or tie it around a tote bag for a stylish statement.
It’s quite possible that you’ve seen some of Rekha Krishnamurthi’s artwork without ever knowing it. At her design studio Divine NY & Co, Rekha dyes and prints textiles for clothing, home decor, and more. She also teaches at the Fashion Institute of Technology, and she has garnered ample media attention from the likes of HuffPost Live and Oprah.com.
