The Scouting Report
The Richmond Flying Squirrels’ bats lay somewhat dormant for the first two games of the season—in the second two games, however, they erupted. In an offensive explosion that secured a split in the season-opening four-game series against the New Britain Rock Cats, the Flying Squirrels tallied 25 hits, two home runs, and 21 runs in the final two games of the series and held the Cats to five runs in the same span. Batting third in the lineup, right-fielder Jarrett Parker anchored the Squirrels’ attack, going 6-for-10 with four RBIs and three runs scored in the process. His two-game hot streak moved his batting average to a team-best .556, leading many to wonder if he is reading catcher’s signs with an eyeball in his left elbow.
Richmond Flying Squirrels
As the Double-A affiliate of the San Francisco Giants, the Richmond Flying Squirrels cultivate big-league talent for one of Major League Baseball’s top organizations. Since 2010—when the club moved to Richmond by way of Connecticut—the Squirrels have hoarded home runs in the warm months and burrowed in the winter underneath The Diamond, which boasts a family zone with nightly entertainment and a kids’ zone with games such as speed pitch and ring toss.
