Montgomery Gentry performing “One in Every Crowd” at the Grand Ole Opry
It’s been a hard couple of years for Eddie Montgomery and Troy Gentry. In September of 2010, the Kentucky country duo parted ways with their longtime label, Sony Music Nashville, and in December, Eddie underwent surgery for prostate cancer. Later that month, his wife of 20 years filed for divorce. But they soldiered on. Bloodied but unbeaten, the good ol’ boys came roaring back on a brand new label with their 2011 album, Rebels on the Run. “Where I Come From” kicks off with a snarling challenge: “Don’t you dare go runnin’ down my little town where I grew up,” sings Montgomery in his twanged baritone, emphasizing the twosome’s unwavering values of God, country, and tractors that run on barbecue sauce. With acoustic guitar in hand, Gentry lends his clear tenor to backing harmonies and his own leads while his cowboy-hatted partner lifts, spins, and leans on the mic stand.
