The Add1ng Machine
- The Plot: Mr. Zero has crunched numbers at a large, faceless firm for 25 years, but the men upstairs have decided he’s no longer needed. They have adding machines now. In a rage, Mr. Zero commits an unspeakable act, for which he’s tried and executed. But the story doesn’t end there. The afterlife, it seems, is a company of its own, and Mr. Zero is once again an accountant—until his boss decides he’s no longer needed there either.
- It’s History: This absurdist, expressionistic play was written in 1923 by Elmer Rice to raise heady questions such as “What is the value of a human worker?”
- The Cause: A portion of all proceeds will go to Safe Horizons NYC, a nonprofit victim-services organization that supports children, adults, and families affected by crime, abuse, trafficking and unemployment.
