The Trial of Ebenezer Scrooge

A Christmas Carol is a holiday classic, but have you ever seen the story from Scrooge’s point of view? That’s just the angle of Mark Brown’s play The Trial of Ebenezer Scrooge. As the curtain opens, it’s been a year since the events of Dickens’s tale, and the lessons the famous miser learned have begun to wear off. In fact, he’s about to launch a lawsuit against Jacob Marley and the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Future. Among many other crimes, Scrooge accuses them of breaking and entering, kidnapping, and slander.

As a parade of well-loved characters take the stand, the ghosts’ very existence hangs in the balance. The trial’s twists and turns uncover unexpected motives and desires in all, culminating in a verdict more surprising than a confetti cannon filled with fortune cookies.

Rhode Island Stage Ensemble

Artistic freedom and creative collaboration are the cornerstones of the Rhode Island Stage Ensemble. The young non-profit grew out of the pooled talents of performers, fundraisers, marketers, and designers who were all fluent in theatre, yet wary of professional theatre's limitations. So the group carved their own path, staging everything from edgy interpretations of Shakespeare to seldom-seen plays by the likes of Wilder, inviting the community to partake along the way. Now, the theater group is a cornerstone of the Woonsocket, RI arts community, offering affordable performances and high-quality education programs for children and adults.
