Robert Cray Band and Mavis Staples
As a five-time Grammy winner and member of the Blues Hall of Fame, Robert Cray has proven himself both as a solo act and opener for legends such as Eric Clapton. With support from his band, Cray pours out tunes that bridge blues influences and rock. Commenting on his eclectic style, Cray says, “When I first started playing guitar, I wanted to be George Harrison—that is, until I heard Jimi Hendrix. After that, I wanted to be Albert Collins and Buddy Guy and B.B. King.” Clutching his Stratocaster tightly and turning its strings into molten lead, he wails through stories of broken relationships in the funky, synth-heavy “I Guess I Showed Her,” recounts his regrets in “Right Next Door,” and dives into extended, high-register solos during “Smoking Gun.”
Robert Cray is joined by fellow blues icon Mavis Staples. The vocalist began her career signing with her family’s band, The Staple Singers, in the 1950s. But once she started recording solo material, Staples swiftly cemented her place in the pantheon of American music legends. From gospel favorites to funky, rocking singles, her eclectic catalogue includes original tunes and lauded covers such as “A House Is Not a Home” and “A Hard Rain’s a-Gonna Fall.”
Sands Bethlehem Event Center
Sands Bethlehem Event Center was constructed only in 2011, and its striking charcoal-colored box still has the sheen of a piece of just-released technology. The space was designed so that no seat would be more than 137 feet or 20 Shaquille O’Neals away from the stage. Despite the intimate feel, the venue is large enough to support no-holds-barred audiovisual displays, and it regularly welcomes spectacle-loving national acts in a variety of genres.
