The Scouting Report
Halfway through the 2015–16 season, the Rochester Americans find themselves in a crowded race for an AHL playoff spot. Although they’ve hovered around the .500 mark all year, the picture is rosier than it might sound: with eight teams advancing to postseason play and the rest doomed to an offseason spent repeating the 2015–16 season, Rochester currently sits just a few points behind the Eastern Conference’s fourth-place team. That leaves plenty of room for Phil Varone, Jason Akeson, and the rest of the Amerks to make a move, especially considering their schedule in February, which includes match-ups against three of the conference’s top four teams.
The Rochester Americans—the Amerks—are a professional ice hockey team that can trace its roots back to the 1956–57 American Hockey League (AHL) season. Based out of Rochester, NY, and playing in the North Division of the AHL Eastern Conference, the Amerks are the Buffalo Sabres' affiliate team. To date, they have won six regular season championships, 14 division championships, three conference championships, and six league championships. Terry and Kim Pegula purchased the Amerks in conjunction with their purchase of the Buffalo Sabres in 2011. Their home base, the Blue Cross Arena at the War Memorial, oversees most of their season, while a select number of games are played at Key Bank Center.
