The Scouting Report

As the 2015–16 regular season spirals toward a close, the Amerks find themselves in a crowded race for an AHL playoff spot. Although they’ve hovered around the .500 mark all year, the picture is rosier than it might sound: with eight teams advancing to the postseason and the rest doomed to a summer spent swimming in their melted backyard hockey rinks, Rochester can still sneak into the playoffs with a late-season push. In late February, the team might have gotten the boost it needed to accomplish just that when it acquired Cole Schneider, Eric O’Dell, and several other players in a trade with the division-rival Senators. That infusion of talent paid immediate dividends, too: the revamped lineup scored 11 goals in its first two games on March 4 and 5, sparking what should be an exciting final month in Rochester.

Rochester Americans

The Rochester Americans—the Amerks—are a professional ice hockey team that can trace its roots back to the 1956–57 American Hockey League (AHL) season. Based out of Rochester, NY, and playing in the North Division of the AHL Eastern Conference, the Amerks are the Buffalo Sabres' affiliate team. To date, they have won six regular season championships, 14 division championships, three conference championships, and six league championships. Terry and Kim Pegula purchased the Amerks in conjunction with their purchase of the Buffalo Sabres in 2011. Their home base, the Blue Cross Arena at the War Memorial, oversees most of their season, while a select number of games are played at Key Bank Center.
