One of Broadway's most beloved musicals, Gypsy, with music by Jule Styne, lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, and based on the book by Arthur Laurents, weaves the tragic tale of an overambitious mother driven to experience fame vicariously through her daughters. Steely matron Rose pushes the reserved Louise and the bubbly June into show business as vaudeville performers, relentlessly honing their act and seeking out ever-greater opportunities until June eventually elopes in defiance of her overbearing mother. Momentarily hurt, Rose then turns her full attention on Louise, belting out “Everything’s Coming Up Roses” and determining to mold her daughter into a star even as the vaudeville circuit begins to die. An accidental booking at a burlesque hall leaves Rose questioning herself, but ultimately follows her nature and pushes Louise onto the stage. Now a young woman, Louise strives to make her mother proud, but ultimately caves into the audience’s demands, becoming Gypsy Rose Lee. The poignant finale "Rose's Turn" has the mother reflecting on her heedless ambition, holding out the chance for redemption.

With a libretto by famed songsmith Stephen Sondheim, the show's classic tunes, such as "Let Me Entertain You" and "You Gotta Get a Gimmick," melodically express the characters' inner lives with pinpoint psychological precision while interweaving into their stage act. Dallas theater personality Patty Granville takes up the role of Mama Rose, following in the footsteps of such greats as Ethel Merman, Angela Lansbury, and Bernadette Peters as she portrays the flawed heroine.

Rockwall Summer Musicals

Founded in 2011 by New York theater veteran Jacob Thomas, Rockwall Summer Musicals blew audiences away in its first season with packed showings of The Sound of Music and Oklahoma! Refusing to rest on their laurels, the company's ambitious second season features Annie Get Your Gun and Gypsy, continuing to bring Broadway to Rockwall without hijacking theater companies' tour buses at rest stops.

Though Rockwall Summer Musicals sometimes features a discounted price online, this Groupon still offers the best deal available.
