In Royal Winnipeg Ballet’s new production of Svengali, Dracula choreographer Mark Godden spins the classic novel Trilby and irreverent filmmaker Guy Maddin’s treatment of the plot into a dance between lust, love, hypnotism, and the perils of stardom. In adapting the text to a toe-based format, Godden updates the setting to a Weimar-esque locale and inspires a sliver of sympathy for the titular hypnotist without diminishing his insidiously manipulative power. Eclipsed by the fame of his repressive mother’s cultish ballet studio, Svengali Harrison James escapes to the decadent city where he meets ingénue Trilby (Amanda Green) and bends her will and her spoons with his mental powers. Under his influence, Trilby becomes a sensation of the dance world but loses grip on her own identity. In a five-star review, Alison Mayes of the Winnipeg Free Press praised the production’s “layered exploration of rigid gender roles, celebrity, conformity, twisted psychology and interpersonal power,” and CBC art critic Robert Knight called Svengali “beautiful, challenging, and a visual turn-on.” The dancers’ movements, alternating between sinuous and severe, classical and modern, unfold to a live orchestral score of pieces by Sergei Rachmaninov, Franz Liszt, Philip Glass, and the Amsterdam Klezmer Band.
