What You'll Do
Standing apart from the usual offerings of plays, concerts, and movies, there's one place in the city where you never know what you'll see: the Circus Freaks' Open Stage. Billed as an adults-only variety show and performer's playground, Open Stage spotlights a freewheeling selection of local artists, with sets ranging from guitar-strumming singer-songwriters to burlesque dancers disrobing as they recite poetry. After the scheduled acts wrap up, the space opens into a free-for-all of artistic expression, where anyone is welcome to start up a jam, practice their juggling, or solicit performance tips from admired acts.
Evening of Unpredictable Performance
Every week, an eclectic collection of veteran and neophyte performers practice their art, perfecting their onstage skills
Eschewing snark and unhelpful criticism, the event centers on positivity, celebrating performers for their willingness to share
Hone Your Own Skills
After the main show, the space becomes a performance playground where anyone can practice and show off their own performative gifts
Guests are welcome to bring their own food and drinks to enjoy and possibly share during the event
Director and Lead Performer, CircusFreaks
Russ Sharek brings the circus to the streets. A graduate of the prestigious New York Goofs Clown School and founder of Dallas's Circus Freaks, he expands the performance arts beyond the tent, always with the air of what the Dallas Observer describes as an "impish Cabaret version of Rasputin." Dedicated to taking the spirit of live performance as far as he can, he also hosts open-stage nights for fledgling performers and all-ages workshops in miming and clownery.
