What You’ll Do
Give him 15 minutes, and Ryan Wood will forever change the way you look at your coffee. That short amount of time is all it takes to roast a small batch of beans—a process that Ryan reveals during this 90-minute lesson. Ryan first discusses how to source fresh beans, and then teaches you how to roast, grind, and brew coffee using simple, inexpensive processes that you can recreate at home.
Intro to Cupping
Ryan explains cupping—a process similar to wine tasting that reveals the bean’s complex flavor profile.
Roast Your Own Beans
After discussing coffee’s different terroirs, guests roast their own batches of fresh beans and identify the two important “crack” stages.
You’ll leave with a half-pound of roasted beans, a half-pound of green beans to roast at home, and information on where to buy additional “green” coffee in the future.
Owner and Head Roaster at CedarWood Roasting Co.
Ryan Wood believes that everyone benefits from a good cup of coffee—from the farmer who grows the bean right down to the person drinking it. In addition to his high standards for flavor, Ryan makes sure he knows everything about the beans he sources; and he won’t buy coffee if he can’t ensure that its farmers make fair wages. This philosophy has guided Ryan since the inception of his hobby-turned-business, CedarWood Roasting Co., where he’s been churning out custom roasted batches of beans since 2007.
