The Scouting Report
The Red Sox hitters may drool in the dugout during their game with the Nationals—and probably not over a new flavor of sunflower seeds. Salem’s high-powered offense has scored 197 runs across 38 games this season, giving them the league’s second-highest total. Meanwhile, the Nationals’ pitching staff has appeared vulnerable during the same span, surrendering a collective 4.39 ERA. At 20–18 over 38 games, the Sox look to stay above .500 as they continue to defend their Carolina League championship.
As the hits pile up on the field, spectators can enjoy the fun of Superhero Night by dressing up like their favorite superhero or trying to convince fellow fans that they actually are superhuman. After the final out, a postgame movie will light up the video board for those who want to continue relishing the spring evening.
Salem Red Sox
Having been nourished in the baseball hotbed of the colonial United States, the Salem Red Sox are part of a rich sports legacy. Though the current iteration of the franchise—a class-A-advanced affiliate of the Boston Red Sox—was founded in 2009, the team continues a tradition of Roanoke Valley baseball that dates back to 1887, in the halcyon days when minor-league teams played exhibitions against their big-league parents and umpires wore chain mail to protect them from angry fans.
Since their rebirth in 2009, the Red Sox have added their own chapter to the annals of local baseball lore, seizing the Carolina League championship in 2013—the same year their parent team won their eighth World Series.
