The Plot

Lewis Carroll’s intricately realized dreamworld leaps to life at the toes of Salt Creek Ballet’s all-ages ensemble. Through elaborate costumes and innovative choreography, Salt Creek Ballet’s artistic directors reintroduce audiences young and old to the mischievous Cheshire Cat, the philosophical Caterpillar, and the Queen of Hearts’s unfortunate subjects. Accompanied by a classical score, Alice navigates a realm of size-changing elixirs, extraordinary tea parties, and enraged monarchs as she attempts to find her way back up the rabbit hole.

The Sights

Alice in Wonderland stands apart from other ballet performances thanks to the wide range in the cast members’ ages and the colorful, original props and costumes. From the flat army of cards, whose dances incorporate the bladed pikes so favored by headsmen, to the purple-and-pink coat and tail of the Cheshire Cat in his memorable pas de deux with Alice, the show conjures nostalgia in adults and creates memories for youngsters. But perhaps the most impressive costume is that of the Caterpillar, which requires no fewer than six dancers—only two fewer than the number of people who play Luciano Pavarotti.

####Choreographers This original production sprung from two brains on Salt Creek Ballet’s [artistic team](http://gr.pn/ZVgvvd): Sergey Kozadayev and Zhanna Dubrovskaya, plus choreographer Susan O'Connell. Leaders of the ensemble since 1998, the St. Petersburg–born directors each boast more than two decades of international experience in kinetic storytelling, on-stage and off. Apart from their professional time in the motherland, Sergey and Zhanna spent seven years at the Colorado Ballet, and their students have gone on to perform in competitions around the world.

About Salt Creek Ballet

It's amazing what a dream can do. In 1985, Royal Ballet School-trained dancer Patricia Sigurdson had a vision of a world-class ballet company serving the western suburbs of Chicago—and it was a vision she made into a reality. From the year of its founding until her retirement in 1998, Sigurdson led the company in a wide range of classic and contemporary works that entertained tens of thousands of local dance lovers and countless stagehands. Today, the ballet continues to thrive under the direction of Sergey Kozadavey and Zhanna Dubrovskaya, both trainees of the celebrated Vaganova School in Saint Petersburg. And Salt Creek Ballet's focus on sharing dance with the community remains as strong as ever—besides staging lavish ballets, the artists train performers of all ages, and schedule lecture demonstrations that offer a peek behind the curtain.
