Reliving America's frontier days has been a trying task ever since Hollywood Westerns fell out of vogue and your 10-gallon hat was ruined by that 10-gallon guacamole recipe. The Utah National Guard fills the ring of the Salt Lake County Equestrian Center with three days of competitions that feature riders of several different kinds of livestock over Labor Day weekend. On August 31 and September 1, cowboys and girls compete for entry into the Rocky Mountain Professional Rodeo Association’s year-end finals. Steer wrestlers try to take down their bovine opponents in submission grips, and bull riders perch atop bucking behemoths, clinging for dear life as their mounts try to throw off their riders and impress dance-show talent scouts in the audience. Riders guide their horses in high-speed slaloms in barrel races, and bareback riders show off their powerful thighs and disdain for man's saddles. On September 3, bull riders take center stage to compete for glory.
