Salute to Vienna: New Year’s Concert
Salute to Vienna saves audiences the airfare to Austria with an evening patterned after Vienna’s world-renowned Neujahrskonzert—a glittery New Year’s Day cavalcade of classical music, arias, and dances. At the helm is Vienna-based conductor Niels Muus, who leads the Strauss Symphony of America through a collection of its namesake composer’s waltzes, polkas, and odes to sausages. The whirlwind tour of the ancient city is vocally guided by a hand-picked selection of European singers, including Viennese soprano Lilla Galambos and tenor David Danholt.
As the vocalists regale the crowd with their euphony, romantic vignettes with the elaborately costumed dancers of the Kiev-Aniko Ballet play out onstage. The joyous evening, which could turn the sulkiest Salieri into a grinning Mozart, concludes with a show-stopping rendition of The Blue Danube, the instantly recognizable, grandly swaying waltz that’s piped through all Austrian radio and TV on New Year’s, and which was used to great effect in Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Danube.
