Romance, wit, and discreet fan semaphore are on display in this new adaptation of Persuasion, Jane Austen’s final novel and The Stage’s twelfth world premiere. Eight years before the story begins, Anne Elliot was 19 years old and deeply in love with a young naval officer named Frederick Wentworth. Her family, however, was not so impressed—Wentworth had no name, and worse, no wealth to speak of, and so Anne was persuaded to break their engagement. Now 27, Anne is a changed woman, subdued and seemingly destined for spinsterhood. Her family, too, has fallen upon hard times. But a chance encounter reintroduces her to the same Frederick Wentworth, who has earned great acclaim and enormous riches through the Napoleonic wars. If Anne could reignite that long-smoldering spark, there might be hope for both the Elliot family and her heart, but Wentworth’s stung pride and her own self-doubt may stand in the way of happiness.
