Reefer Madness: The Musical
In 1936, a few puffs of marijuana—or, as its known here, “devil’s weed”—is all that it takes to turn clean-cut high schooler Jimmy Harper into a no-hope teen bent on a life of violence and lust. As Jimmy spirals deeper into chuckle-inducing depravity—sassing his parents, boosting money from charity, visiting terrors upon trusting animals—campy musical numbers such as the swinging “Down at the ‘Ol Five and Dime” and showy “Listen to Jesus, Jimmy” heighten and highlight his plight. J.C. Himself even intervenes, aided by a chorus of showgirl angels, but Jimmy’s in too deep, on the lam in a stolen Packard on the road to over-the-top, satirical moral decay.

Reefer Madness began as a completely earnest exploitation film first released in 1936. The plot has been changed somewhat for Kevin Murphy and Dan Studney’s wickedly funny stage adaptation, but what remains is the borderline hysterical series of warnings of the side effects of just one toke: addicts might be stricken with a case of the cannibalistic munchies, or a compulsion to play the piano. The musical itself was adapted into a 2005 film, starring Alan Cumming, Kristen Bell, Ana Gasteyer, and Neve Campbell.
