Norm Macdonald and Kevin Nealon
Warning: contains bleeped swears and harsh words for non-Janices
Warning: contains anxiety over political correctness
They both rose to prominence as some of the sharpest members of some of the sharpest casts on Saturday Night Live, and they both anchored Weekend Update with a comic sensibility uniquely their own. They both deliver their one-liners with a Saharan dryness, and they both have perfected the art of grounding the absurd in the real world. Yet it’s hard to think of two comics more different than Norm Macdonald and Kevin Nealon. Where Nealon embodies a wide range of characters—from SNL’s Mr. Subliminal to Doug Wilson on Showtime’s Weeds—Norm Macdonald seems to always play Norm Macdonald, even when Norm Macdonald is also playing a talking pigeon on Mike Tyson Mysteries. But together they make the most sense of all, with Nealon’s bizarre ridiculousness balancing out Macdonald’s dark, incongruously funny observations.
