What You’ll Do
When a favorite pair of jeans gets a few too many rips, it typically gets demoted to the back of the closet, or even worse, to the bottom of a trash bag. DIY clothing artist and Think Outside the Store owner Sarah Gingold shows you how to rescue damaged clothing from an early demise using basic hand-sewing techniques.
Master Hand-Sewing Fundamentals
You’ll learn how to replace buttons and complete simple hand-stitches.
Restore Old Clothes or Make New Ones
Sarah will also show you how to use a sewing machine to repair minor tears and fashion entirely new garments from scratch.
Clothing Artist, Sewing Expert
Making clothes for a living might seem like an unusual career for a Government and Politics major, but the transition made perfect sense to Sarah Gingold. She started sewing in high school, but became serious about the craft when she read The Travels of a T-shirt in the Global Economy, which opened her eyes to the economic and environmental downsides of mass-producing clothes. She also realized that store-bought items never seemed to fit as well as something she had made herself. In 2009, Sarah made good on a New Year’s resolution, purchased a foot-pedaled sewing machine, and mastered the art of repurposing old garments, opening her eco-friendly studio, Think Outside the Store, in 2011.
