Based on a novel by 19th-century romantic fabulist E.T.A. Hoffman, The Nutcracker weaves a magical tale of holiday adventure around one of the most recognizable scores in the ballet repertoire. The nonprofit Saratoga City Ballet presents their own take on this classic, featuring pre-professional student performers ages 4 through 18. It begins when the Snow Flakes guide young Clara through the Land of Sweets where she meets the Sugar Plum fairy and regales her court with the story of the battle against the mice and Rat King. The kingdom celebrates their triumph with a medley of exotic national dances—including a Spanish bolero and Candy Canes dancing to the Russian Trepak “Waltz of the Flowers”—which adds to the phantasmagoric event. The Sugar Plum fairy, herself, performs a dance to honor Clara before the whole dream ends, as all dreams must.
