The Scouting Report
On July 10, the Saratoga Polo Association’s 2015 Tournament Season bursts onto Whitney Field, galloping into a marathon of majestic polo action for nine straight weekends. Friday and Sunday evenings are breezy outdoor affairs on Saratoga Polo’s bucolic grounds, with guests—some in sundresses and casual polos, others done up in cocktail dresses and suits—congregating around the 300-yard green field. But like town hall meetings and tag-team presidential debates, spectators can become participants as well. At halftime of each match, guests are invited onto the field to partake in the traditional divot-stomping, the process of smoothing out the turf churned by horses’ hooves and earthworm warfare. Guests can also come onto the field post-match for the traditional sabrage ceremony, in which a special sword is used to uncork champagne as fans and players come together to celebrate the day’s winners.
Saratoga Polo Association
Established in 1898, the Saratoga Polo Association has now played host to the ancient, genteel sport of teamwork and horsemanship through three centuries. Guests can enjoy panoramic views of the match from the air-conditioned clubhouse—which boasts a full cash bar and light dining options. Outside, spectators are invited to bring leashed dogs to matches.
