Penned by local woman of letter Miriam K. Center, Johnny Mercer and Me! delves into the tragedies and triumphs of the Savannah-born singer and lyricist’s eventful life. The show is narrated through the eyes of Mercer’s longtime confidant, Maxine, as she follows his initial Broadway successes, his peak as a Hollywood songwriter, and his struggles with romantic affairs and alcoholism. Some of his greatest hits accompanies the onstage action, from the upbeat infatuation of "Jeepers Creepers" to the Academy Award–winning jazz standard "Days of Wine and Roses."
Savannah Community Theatre
Anyone active in Savannah’s theatre community in the 70s and 80s would likely have encountered Tom Coleman III, a director who began his career at the Savannah Young People’s Theatre. He produced and directed more than 200 shows in the ensuing 35 years, culminating in the founding of the Savannah Community Theatre. The company often produces shows by local playwrights, along with a weekly, pirate-themed murder mystery dinner show.
