What You'll Get
Musicals have always brought impossible dreams to life onstage, from cats that can talk to humans who can sing in public without feeling weird. For $20, you get one ticket for seating in rows L–R in the center section or rows L–U in the left or right sections at any performance between Friday, February 15, and Sunday, March 10 (up to a $43.50 value, including all fees). See the schedule for available dates and times. Doors open 30 minutes before showtime.
Staged as the final concert of the Raise the Praise Tour, Altar Boyz stars five small-town friends––Matthew, Mark, Luke, Juan, and Abraham––who join musical talents to become a picture-perfect pop group, believing it’s their destiny to save the world one fan at a time. The fivesome converts fans with choreographed dancing and one infectious pop hook after another in songs such as the abstinence anthem “Something About You” and the hip-shaker “Rhythm in Me.” In “The Calling,” melodies harmonize as the boys profess: “Jesus called me on my cell phone / No roaming charges were incurred.” Throughout the performance, the Boyz repeatedly check their onstage “Soul Sensor DX-12” that displays the number of heavy souls in attendance, with a goal of making the reading drop to zero. Altar Boyz, which spent five years off-Broadway, parodies model boy bands such as the Backstreet Boys, ‘N Sync, or Tom Brokaw’s Funky Bunch, yet as they do, they make the audience forget it’s watching a spoof. The New York Times admitted that the passion of the performance and the sincerity of the songs softens the tongue-in-cheek lyrics, making up a show that “sends you home with a smile.”<p> Though this merchant sometimes offers a discounted price online, the deal is still the best deal available.
