The Scouting Report
In the Storm’s home opener against the Phoenix Mercury on June 2, forward Camille Little took a risk. With her team clinging to a three-point lead and still 57 seconds left to go, she opted for a three-pointer. She drained it, stretching the Storm’s lead to six—all but ensuring the team’s victory and Little’s banishment from the Mercury’s birthday parties. Such clutch performances have become a common theme for the Storm, considering the team has made nine-straight trips to the postseason. They continue their pursuit of yet another playoff berth on June 18, when they defend the KeyArena floor in a cross-country matchup against the Washington Mystics.
Like thunderclouds rolling over Puget Sound, the Storm didn’t wait long to make it rain on Seattle. In October of 2004—only five years into its history—the franchise claimed its first WNBA championship. In the deciding game of that series, the Storm kept the Connecticut Sun from scoring for nearly five minutes, the result of the team’s lockdown defense and the saran wrap stretched across the Sun’s basket. It was a legendary performance, and one that set off a string of nine consecutive playoff appearances and a second title in 2010. In that year, they also tied the league’s regular-season record for wins, eventually sweeping the Atlanta Dream in the finals.
